Subtle Biases in Society

Subtle ways in which society is biased and it affects everything we do.

Subtle biases are natural and tend to favor the majority. Recognizing them allows us to address, adapt, and overcome. Multiple biases can often combine to create increased challenge.

Three biases I have observed are:

  1. Skills – We teach ‘book’ topics, but often neglect teaching social understanding and response, which is a challenge for many.
  2. Function-Society is more inclined to support ‘morning people’ than ‘night people’.
  3. Career-Defined careers are easy to understand, while Creatives often struggle for direction and support.

All of these can be understood and developed, but to see the need (and possibility) for action, we must first be aware.

Do you agree with these? If so, how have you overcome them? What other biases should we consider?
